Presentations (3rd & 5th grades)***4th grade is not giving presentations this year due to the number of late starts. We are working hard to finish our robozoo project. Can't wait to share it with you!
3/11-13 All three classes has a mini lesson in what Pi means. I posed the question of "what is pi?' We had a variety of answers about what it was related to, but not a clear idea of what it was. Sooo...we set out to prove pi! Armed with a wide variety of canned goods (to donate to the McLane Food Drive) we sketched the diameter of our cans on paper, creating 4 diameter strips. (This was a great time to talk about margin of error!) Being as precise as we could be, we taped our strips around the circumference of our cans. A quick lesson on fractions/decimals and paper folding (.14 is close to 1/8). We discovered that the fourth strip folds down to make the .14. It was a visual lesson and lots of "I get it!" shouts were heard. I found the lesson here, if you are interested in trying it out at home. This teacher used duct tape cylinders instead of cans.
Pi Day! 3-14 (Albert Einstein's birthday, too!)Click on the Snow (4th) webpage for details. (coming 1/12/14)

Mission to Moon Fieldtrip (4th & 5th)
Check out this website/gameWe've introduced a new "getting settled" activity, which 4th grade loved today. Every day, the makers of the "Set" game create a daily challenge looking at attributes that is hosted on line. The class enjoyed it so much this morning, that I promised to link it on our class website. It is also a family card game that you might enjoy. Good luck finding all the "sets!"
