Egg Drop and BBQ this Week

Picture

Please be sure that both permission slips (links below) have been turned in and remember that you don't have to bring a lunch. Parents, if you would like to help out at this event, please email me.  Last year, we found that extra hands helped the repairs and needed a lookout at the top of the tower.

Rainy Day Plan (Plan B):  The good weather that we had over the past two weeks has faded on us.  Our back up plan for the Egg Drop is to have Mrs. Flo climb up at 16 foot ladder in the covered playshed at McLane.  (I'm really hoping that we don't have much rain on those days!)

More information about the "rules" can be found here.

We will be hosting a BBQ lunch on the last day of PATS for 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.  Mrs. Ronning and I will be grilling hot dogs, offering chips and lemonade.  Our lunch will start a little early, 11:00 am, so that we can be cleaned up and headed over to the Egg Drop at 12:00. If your student would like something other than that, they are welcome to bring it from home.  Grill masters and volunteers are more than welcome!!

5th Grade Robotics Opportunity

The new Jefferson/Marshall Varsity Robotics Teams are now accepting applications for the 2012-2013  season.  Just like varsity sports, these  after-school teams are an opportunity for experienced students to take their Robotics, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math skills to the next level as they tackle in the international FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competition.

Last week, students who would be attending Jefferson or Marshall were given an application.  We shared some examples of the competition and talked about the commitment involved.  It is because of PATS experience with robotics that these students are all eligible to submit an application.

Applications are due by May 31st.  While not difficult, the application will require some time to complete.  If you are interested, here are some links to more information:

This link will take you to STEMpals, the booster website for STEM.  Mr. Steele has put up much more information about the program and you can download an extra copy of the application.  It also has contact information for students that will be attending Washington and Reeves Middle Schools.

This link is to a you-tube video explaining the Food Factor Competition from last year.

This link is to another video showing a team completing the Body Forward Competition from two years ago.

This link is for a video of the game designer modeling how the Food Factor challenge should be completed.

We had a wonderful evening with the animator, Marty Fuller.  Thank you to everyone who came and participated.  He showed us some of the steps in the process of animating a movie.  We saw some of the tools of the trade and he even made us a drawing to have.  He answered questions from students for about 30 minutes.  (and there were some great questions!)

It was a lot of fun to set up this Skype session as part of our "Evening with Series."  If you have an idea of someone we could Skype with, please contact Mrs. Flo and we would love to set up more evenings like these.
